The Inconvenience Store: Temporary Space

Oct. 15th, 2015 | 02:22 pm

The six months I spent in Christchurch were very important in many ways. I met some good people, started a new career in hospitality, learned lots of new skills, volunteered in Pallet Pavilion for the awesome www.gapfiller.org.nz and -thanks to Ryan Reynolds- also had my first "solo" exhibition in another of their projects, the Inconvenienience Store.

The Inconvenience Store was created in a vacant commercial space as a hybrid between a store and an art residency to explore the theme of (in)convenience as it relates to post-quake Christchurch. The purpose was to raise a critical voice about the way the city was being (re)developed and offer residents and visitors something surprising, challenging, fun. Something to do, to think and talk about, to gather around and connect over. The Store was given to different groups/individuals to run each week. The requirements were to play with the theme of inconvenience and to have something for sale. The currency not necessarily being money.

Here are some snaps of what happened in the store during my week:

Memories of a Bachelor's Pad

Photos by John

I was a support worker in Northern Territory, Australia. John was one of my clients. He suffered from memory problems.

He lived in an old house with his two dogs and two cows. John used to feed his own food to the dogs and the dog food to the cows.

These photos are from a disposable camera that John found in his drawer one day. Together they show a view that he loved. One from his back veranda where he used to sit for hours everyday.

Today John lives in a nursing home in town.
